  1. It's worse than that: the Dutch have a meaningless modal particle "hoor" that sounds exactly like the English word "whore" which they append to the end of sentences all the time without thinking about it.

  2. Not only that, but my students often struggle with the difference between the vowel sounds in "huur" (rent) and "hoer" (whore). It has lead to moments when they explain they have had a problem with "de hoer betalen", only to realise right afterwards what they said does not mean "to pay the *rent*"...
