Fluency Signal

You know you're fluent in a foreign language when the locals stop complimenting you giving you compliments

  1. Largely true! And occasionally you get asked where _in the country_ you are from.

Behavior seems to go a long way, too. The way people perceive fluency is connected to in-group and out-group perceptions. If they are unsure about fluency but see a behavior that is clearly not of the country, then they will tend to label you as foreign. Otherwise, I feel like there is a decent amount of leeway even within a country and even among its own speakers.
