  3. The Japanese are even more this way - they almost never directly say anything negative.

    American asks directions:

    What Japanese person says:"Ah, hm, well, lets see. Maybe if you went this way...."
    What you hear: "They're thinking about how to direct me there."
    What they mean: "I have no idea where this place is. Please ask someone else."
