  1. Interesting fact: As a choice in the Kid's Menu besides Ice Cream,Burger King in Germany offers apple sticks which look like french-fries. They are called: Apfel Pommes, which would mean: apple apples.

  2. In Belgium they still use the "Pommes frites" but in France we usually only use "Frites" :)

    1. I'm Belgian and I can tell you everyone says "frites" here too! Even in Dutch, they say "frieten" or "frietjes" (a diminutive).

      "Pommes frites" sounds really old-fashioned to my Belgian ears. :)

  4. In Austrian German we say "Erdäpfel" to potatos, which literally means earth-apples, basically the same as "pommes de terre".

  5. FYI: The "long form" pommes frites is still occasionally used in Germany - but then, curiously, it's usually pronounced more or less correctly.
