I think the fact that 4 is considered an unlucky number in china and the clock is all fours is supposed to be the joke
Maybe it's a reverse paradox. If you combine enough bad luck items, they become a lucky charm again.

Clocks are considered bad gifts because the word for clock sounds similar to the word for end in Mandarian
