Practice on your own around your house, like naming everything you use, when you use your tooth brush, and say(using German for demonstration),"Ich bin mit meiner Zahnbürste." (I am using my toothbrush). One person I heard about actually put Post-It-Notes on everything with their name in the language they were learning, repetition is the key, and make up your own little reference book(pocket notebook) with phrases you will use most often, the first phrase you should have is, Hello, I am learning {language}, and then whatever you want to ask/say. This way you can learn the language, and most people are more patient with you as well. Good Luck.

After a couple of days learn more and more words, like 30-40-50 per day (it depends on your limit) And also learn grammar, it helps you make sentences. In time you'll make more complicated sentences.

Brilliant! I'm climbing conversational ridge with my Irish, recently landed again on the level with maps and sandwiches by starting with the new book, but then had a lift up when I realized that recently I understand more and more from Radio na Gaeltachta transmissions. YAY! :D
Love the comics! Another tip I used when living as an exchange student was to turn the captions on when watching Dutch tv. I found it helpful to read what they were saying as well. :-)
I came across your page a few days ago and I really like your comics! I'm from Vietnam, studying in Germany. I have lived in Finland, France and Netherlands before and I have had very similar experience with the languages and people. Keep it up!
One word! Patience! When you reach that mountain, you'll certainly be amazed of what you're capable of. And keep track of what ever you're learning time to time. So when u look back, you know that you are almost there. It's kind of motivating to me..
Definitely. Every six months I usually try to record a conversation with myself. That way I can look back and see how much I've improved! Or ... how little.
